I didn’t realise that the bat toy had been the first one to come out but that makes sense as the early Megatron and Optimus Primal toys where they were a bat and a crocodile came out VERY early on…didn’t they come out before any of the actual official fiction for Beast Wars?

Yep, the initial toy bios (and a mini-comic that came with the toys, i think?) characterized the Beast Wars as being just a direct continuation of G1 where Optimus and Megatron were the same guys having combined their robot parts with lab-grown organic bits. The bio for the original gorilla Optimus Primal also suggested that he was a giant gorilla, big enough to match Megatron’s size as a T. rex.

Somewhere in the multiverse of Transformers, this continuity remains….

Somewhere out there is a version of the G1 universe where Megatron became a crocodile and Optimus Prime became either a bat or a giant gorilla monster and the two are waging a BEAST WAR on modern day earth

And I would be very willing to read fanfic about that wonderfully strange mini-continuity :D

Reblogging b/c I too would like to see something of that mini-continuity, if only for being able to see more classic G1 Transformers as they’d have looked in the Beast Wars line…

For a long time that minicomic was the only fiction I had for BW, so my own headcanon sorta followed in its footsteps. 

Incidentally, a number of BW characters are canonically their G1 counterparts in new bodies. Grimlock, Ironhide, Silverbolt (the eagle), and Prowl (either the lion or the owl, or maybe both? I don’t remember) come to mind.
